ABSTRACT

Description: Major temple complex, site of a ninth-century Hindu temple dedicated to the god Siva. The largest Hindu temple complex in Java, it is considered an outstanding example of Hindu art. The complex stands on three levels of man-made terraces and at one time had well over 200 small temples on the two lower levels. Only two have been repaired. The focus of restoration has been on the top level (main courtyard), where eight major and eight minor temples stand. Particular attention has been paid to the three largest temples, dedicated to Siva, Brahmā, and Vishnu.
