ABSTRACT

The present Shanhaiguan is close to the site of the ancient pass of Yuguan. Despite frequent claims, there is no evidence that either place was the easternmost end of the Great Wall built under Qin Shihuang (ruled 246-210 B.C.). His wall probably followed the line of older fortifications built during the period of the Warring States (403-221 B.C.) under the kingdom of Yan, which ran far to the north of Shanhaiguan, through present-day Liaoning province. Under the Han (206 B.C.–A.D. 220), the name Yu was attached only to a river, although the Han District of Yangle covered the area in which Shanhaiguan now stands.
