ABSTRACT

Soon after Srīnagar's inception, the ancient Brahman scribe Kalhana wrote in his historical chronicle of early India called Rājata ranginī that the city had some 3,600,000 houses, some of which reached the clouds. In more reliable accounts, Mirza Haidar and Abul Fazl wrote that many of the houses in Srīnagar were at least five stories high and were constructed completely of wood. Each house was multiterraced and had several apartments and galleries. Many such houses still exist in old Srīnagar.
