ABSTRACT
Th e oldest city on the island of Taiwan, Tainan's rich history is evident in the numerous temples and monuments dating from the last several centuries spread throughout the city's narrow alleys and wide thoroughfares. Once populated only by aboriginal peoples and a small settlement of Chinese émigrés and Japanese traders, Tainan today has a population of over 650,000 and is the island's fourth-largest city.
