ABSTRACT

Th e Buddhist vihara (monastery) at Takht-i-Bahi was aban doned at least 1,300 years ago and has fallen into ruin. Its principal statues and reliefs have been removed for display elsewhere, in nearby Peshāwar but also far away in Berlin. Only roofless walls and tumbled stones remain at the site to recall the once-magnificent culture of the Buddhist kingdom of Gandhāra, a crossroads of Asian and European traditions within which Takht-i-Bahi was an important religious center.
