Location: About twenty-two miles from both Islamābād and Rāwalpindi, at the axis of ancient trade routes from China, Central and West Asia, and India.

Description: One of the greatest archaeological treasures in Asia. The former site of an important university in the Kingdom of Gandhāra, it flourished from the sixth century B.c. to the sixth century A.D. First discovered in 1852, Taxila's ruins extend some twenty-five square miles and are divided into three cities.
