ABSTRACT

Description: An ancient city dating to about 600 B.c. and with evidence of prehistoric and protohistoric occupation in the neighboring area. Capital of western Mālwa up to the eleventh century A.D., when the capital was shifted to Dhār. Mentioned in classical sources as an inland entrepôt with links to the coastal port of Barygaza (modern Broach) at the Narmada estuary in modern Gujarāt. One of the holiest cities of the Hindu religion.
