ABSTRACT

Wuchang is the oldest and most historically important of the three cities that amalgamated to form the city of Wuhan in 1950. Wuchang lies on the south bank of the Yangtze River. The former cities of Hanyang and Hankou, which joined with Wuchang to form Wuhan, lie on the north bank and are divided by the Han River. Although Wuchang is roughly 2,000 years old, little of its past survives in Wuhan, which is best known today as an industrial and university city and as the capital of the province of Hubei.
