Location: In the center of southern India, almost equidistant from Madras on the east coast (183 miles away) and Mangalore on the west.
Description: Perhaps the most westernized of all Indian cities, Bangalore was founded as a fortress town in the sixteenth century and became the center of a fiefdom ruled by Hyder Ali in the eighteenth century, and as such played a significant role in the Mysore Wars. It was the headquarters of the British rulers of the former Indian state of Mysore from 1831 to 1881; today the capital of the modern state of Karnātaka, it is a center of industry and commerce, noted for its progressive attitudes and its varied cultural and social life.
