ABSTRACT

Location: In the South China Sea, between the Philippines and Malaysia, northwest of Borneo; bordered by Sarawak to the east, west, and south, and by the South China Sea to the north.

Description: Malay Islamic Monarchy, 5,765 square miles in area, ruled by the Sultan of Brunei, the second-richest man in the world. Once Brunei controlled most of Borneo; today Borneo is divided between three countries: the Malaysian-controlled Sarawak and Sabah, Indonesian-controlled Kalimantan, and the independent state of Brunei. Brunei is separated into two sections by Sarawak.
