ABSTRACT

The name Ch nju sometimes is written as Jeonju because of differences in the systems used to write Korean words in Roman letters. In either spelling, it is unfortunately all too easy for non-Koreans to confuse this city with either Chongju, another city in the same province, or Ch' ngju, the capital of North Ch'ungch' ng province. Ch nju has been one of the main settlements on the Honam Plain since ancient times, benefiting from its position on the main route from northern Korea through the Nyorong Mountains, which lie south and east of the city, to the southern coast, but also sharing fully in Korea's complex history of dynastic change, peasant revolt, and intervention by neighboring empires.
