ABSTRACT

Around the middle of the eighth century, the Cālukyas were swept aside by the Rāshtrakūtas, the last ruling house to whom the Elephanta temples have been attributed. Construc tion dates vary from the early seventh to the late eighth century. The Kailāsanātha temple at Ellora, which was built by the Rāshtrakūtas around 750 and has many similarities to the Elephanta temples, is adduced as additional evidence for this hypothesis.
