ABSTRACT

Both were great conquerors, expanding the sultanate into the surrounding Hindu-ruled areas. However, after the death of Mahmūd, Gujarāt and Ahmadābād entered a period of de cline. While the economy remained buoyant and most of the population was little affected by political changes, there was considerable instability at the top; this continued until Mughal rule in 1573 restored stability. During this period the nobles often became virtually independent, refusing to send revenue to the capital and the sultan. The city suffered as a result.
