ABSTRACT

Adler (1979) believes that to be human is to feel inferior. Humans strive toward superiority to overcome this feeling of inferiority. The specific direction of this striving is unique to the individual. Those with an organ inferiority place upon themselves an additional burden and strive with greater urgency. They tend to overcompensate for their defective organs. Examples of these phenomena are Demosthenes, who had a speech impediment and became known for his great oration, and Franklin Roosevelt, who was crippled by poliomyelitis, and became president of the U.S. It is the purpose of this study to determine whether children with a visible physical handicap demonstrate overcompensation compared to controls.
