ABSTRACT

The original meaning of nostalgia—nost (returning home) and algia (painful condition), which refers to acute longing for familiar surroundings—was at one time an illness, a type of depression that occurs due to the loss of home. Today, nostalgia is commonly known as a romantic sentiment. Rarely has the relationship between youth and nostalgia been discussed nor the connection between them been clarified. Although it is implicit, nostalgia has always been an undercurrent in the discourse of youth. Individuals have grieved over their losses and fantasized their lost objects. Simultaneously they have been absorbed into a nationalistic movement of reconstructing a stable homeland. This has resulted in producing various subjects ranging from adolescents to loyal citizens, future-oriented disciplined youths, and hybrid youths.
