ABSTRACT

PROFESSOR DON NAKANISHI'S three-year fight for tenure is probably best described as "institutional guerrilla warfare"-a classic David and Goliath struggle, pitting an emerging minority community and its allies against a massive institution. The whole story, combining elements of intrigue, espionage, double-agents, internal bickering, back-door politics and secret deals is, unfortunately, beyond the scope of this article. Nevertheless, the tortuous journey taken by Don and his supporters illustrates the difficulties in fighting Goliath and the rewards in winning.
