ABSTRACT

Popular discourse and scientific research on rap music and Hip-Hop culture has become increasingly important given the prevailing presence of Hip-Hop culture in the lives of contemporary youth (Chang, 2005), particularly many youth from urban and economically disadvantaged communities. During the past decade, Hip-Hop-based interventions have become more prevalent as well, given the relevance and meaning that some of the messages found in rap lyrics have in the lives of many youth and young adults (see Kobin & Tyson, 2006, for review). This chapter features a case example and application of principles and techniques associated with a specific Hip-Hop intervention. First, a brief overview of Hip-Hop culture and a review of Hip-Hop-based interventions are presented. After this broad review, a detailed description of a specific intervention called Hip-Hop Therapy (H2T; Tyson, 2002, 2003; Tyson, Ryan, Gomory, & Teasley, 2008) is provided, along with the theoretical foundation and preliminary research evidence for this intervention. Next, the case example is presented, including background information, a synopsis of the treatment process, and 294follow-up assessment of the outcomes associated with the goals established during treatment. Finally, this chapter ends with a discussion of future research directions that might further demonstrate the efficacy and promise of Hip-Hop-based interventions with youth.
