ABSTRACT

The history of the Brazilian Amazon region is a history of migration. The population inhabiting that region is formed by the miscegenation of several people, who arrived at different times, including Indians, ribeirinhos, 1 quilombolas, 2 migrants from the northeast and south of Brazil as well as the colonizers. Migration to the Amazon is a process which has gone along with economic cycles, flowing more intensely since the nineteenth century (Castro 2008).
