ABSTRACT

Literary creation is influenced by the social milieu of the respective society. The development of society is a major concern for literary artists; therefore, literary works address their social and political climate. The Yoruba novel was born out of the attempt of the Christian Missionary Society to evangelize the Yoruba community and the efforts of Yoruba indigenes who desired to promote the Yoruba cultural heritage through literature. 1 The attempt germinated to different categories of novels. Ogunsina (1992) and Isola (1992) classified the Yoruba novel into four categories: the novel of Fagunwa's tradition, social novels, historical novels and crime novels. 2
