ABSTRACT

In 1982, Ian Paisley, moderator of Northern Ireland’s Free Presbyterian Church, perceived his religious and cultural identity to be under threat by the visit of Pope John Paul II to the United Kingdom. In a pamphlet published in protest to the planned visit, Paisley suggested a way of maintaining Ulster Protestant identity:

Do we want to preserve our heritage? The remedy is in our hands. Let us all diligently, in private, read this Book and hide its precious words in our hearts as its words are the great preservatives from sin. 1
