Background Information The United States of America has more than 309 million people (US Bureau of the Census, 2010), and many of its citizens have immigrated to the United States from around the world. The majority identify themselves as European American (60%), but there is also a rapidly growing Latino population (15%), people of African descent (12%), people of Asian descent (4%), Native American or Native Alaskan people (1%), Native Hawaiians or Pacifi c Islanders (0.1%), and persons who are identifi ed as mixed race (2.4%).
