ABSTRACT

I first fell in love with psychology as a high-school student. Beyond an array of Advanced Placement classes, my high school offered the opportunity to take Introductory Psychology at the junior college (San Francisco City College) just a few streetcar stops away from my high school. Perhaps it was the allure of taking a college course, but I was immediately hooked. I became a psychology major at the University of California, Berkeley. I attended Berkeley during some turbulent times, but between protests against the Vietnam War, being tear-gassed on the way to class, and student strikes, I managed to take a wide range of courses. Several (such as a wonderful two-semester course in Black History and a sociology course taught by Robert Bellah) had great resonance later in my career. In my major, I was especially attracted to courses in developmental and social psychology.
