ABSTRACT

The philosophies of mainstream and inclusive education for disabled students have been in place for over 40 years. They are hardly novel concepts, yet how far have we really come? If recent UK Government Green Paper publications are any indication, it appears that there is some distance to go – ‘we will remove the bias towards inclusion’ (Department for Education (DfE) 2011: 5). Furthermore, many newly designated educational academies are hesitant to accept disabled students as they are free from Local Authority control (BBC Radio 4 2011).
