ABSTRACT

As has been recognised throughout the history of the philosophy of education, values lie at the heart of education and schooling. Which precise values pupils should be taught, who decides such values, and which methods should be used to teach pupils about values, remain contested issues across contemporary nation states. This chapter explores, in an introductory way, the place and nature of values in contemporary education and schooling. In its conclusion, it also points towards some useful areas for further research in the field.
