ABSTRACT

This chapter explores American pharmaceutical influence on the distribution of antiretroviral drugs in Uganda. The government of Uganda and the people of Uganda need to be involved in the research, planning, and execution of any decision made about their HIV/AIDS relief system. For a start, President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief staff around the country ought to work with their Ugandan counterparts to study in great detail the treatment expenditures of the country so that Uganda may develop a plan that results in more people accessing treatment. While Uganda has been represented as a success story in fighting HIV/AIDS, Nigeria, a somewhat underrepresented example, also shares similar progress in its battle. Uganda is dependent upon American foreign aid to avoid drastic slowing in its anti-HIV/AIDS progress or, worse yet, regression to higher transmission rates. Instead of just procuring external drugs, Uganda should make long-term investments in making HIV/AIDS treatment as widespread and efficient as possible.
