ABSTRACT
New Year’s Day 1993, 12 European Community nation-states opened their borders to one another. Trade barriers were eliminated among Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Also, the democratization of Eastern Europe shattered East-West polarization (Gordon), further unifying continental Europe.
