ABSTRACT

The term sexual harassment was spotlighted by the media when Anita Hill appeared before Congressional members and charged Clarence Thomas, then Supreme Court nominee, with subjecting her to offensive behavior that included discussing pubic hairs and pornography. Americans became more familiar with the term sexual harassment when the Navy's Tailhook convention was revealed for its less than conventional and professional practices. Ninety individuals, civilians and Navy personnel, reported being verbally or physically assaulted in a sexual manner at the Tailhook convention in 1991. Although these two events were considered spectacular media stories, sexual harassment is an everyday occurrence and far too many people have their own stories of sexual harassment.
