ABSTRACT

In a qualitative research class I teach I have had an assignment that asks students to do a visual representation of the landscape of qualitative research. I've seen an array of intriguing and innovative formats—a solar system, game boards, a script for a play. One project that has stuck with me across the years is a city map, divided into sections by epistemology. Superimposed on the sections are streets named by methodology and methods. Displayed in this way, you can see how research studies are multiply determined, simultaneously representing ways of knowing, ways of thinking about knowledge generation, and methods of generating data. It is this idea that animates this chapter.
