ABSTRACT

As a clinical psychologist specializing in problem gambling, I met my first Internet poker player seeking treatment in 2003. He and subsequent others had many similarities with other problem gamblers playing other games, but there were also differences. Their erroneous gambling beliefs were poker-specific and some had actually been very successful players. This new group of problem gamblers sparked an interest to know more about online poker players. This chapter presents highlights from my contribution to the Swedish government evaluation of the introduction of Internet poker at Svenska Spel (a state-owned gambling operator).
