ABSTRACT

This chapter depends upon two linked assumptions. Firstly, that language is not a neutral medium—it does not simply reflect a pre-existing reality but constructs systems of ideas and ideologies. Since ideology is a notoriously slippery term, I had better, at the outset, introduce my understanding of it.
