ABSTRACT

Case Story: Bicultural American Fathering Salvino is a U.S. father of a 6-year-old son, Filippo. He lives with his wife, Anne Marie (an American-born Ph.D. in Italian who is a college teacher) in New York City. Salvino was born in Switzerland but raised in Sicily by his Italian parents, and immigrated to the U.S. in 1991. He first worked at a restaurant in San Diego and finally settled in New York City where he met Anne Marie, whom he married in 1995. Over the years, he continued his work at various restaurants, and through perseverance, dedication, and a belief in the American Dream, he eventually achieved a prestigious position with an Italian company that imports wines. His work takes him back to Italy on a regular basis. Salvino studied for many years in preparation for U.S. citizenship, which he received in July, 2000. He and his wife share household responsibilities, childcare, and living expenses, with Salvino doing most of the cooking and Anne Marie being in charge of childcare arrangements.
