ABSTRACT

How many leaders has our society lost as a result of the mismatch between what leads to success in college and what leads to success in life? In some large universities and especially state universities, students may see nothing but multiple-choice tests, at least until the very end of their studies. ”e classes are just too large to allow anything else. For these students, one could argue, it makes sense to have college admissions tests that are multiple choice, because performance on multiple-choice items tends to predict performance on other multiple-choice items (Sternberg & the Rainbow Project Collaborators, 2006). But before jumping to this conclusion, one might ask what the purpose of college is anyway. Is it to develop skill in multiple-choice testing or the knowledge that multiple-choice tests test?
