ABSTRACT
The age-old responsibility of women for the day-to-day physical well-being and welfare of the family. Consigning a young woman in university to the department of education or social work is as nothing compared with urging her to preoccupy herself with her own feminine experience and giving her college credit for it. The contribution of women to that arrangement, therefore, is nothing more than a form of slavery or at best, indentured servitude. Marriage has been maintained by terror—the fear of actual male violence, the fear of being abandoned by one's husband without protection and without resources, and the fear of social contumely. A marriage without roles, as anyone who has witnessed the phenomenon at close range knows, has become not a mutual recognition of the equal importance to the enterprise of what both partners to it contribute—but a court of litigation.
