ABSTRACT
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, fuelled by the industrial revolution and the questions it raised about the difference between handmade and machine-made objects, there were intense debates about the nature of decoration and its place relative to, on the one hand, non-decorated objects, and, on the other hand, the arts. In the late nineteenth century, this debate culminated in the arts and crafts movement to which I will refer later.
