ABSTRACT
THE HISTORY OF twentieth-century Latin America, told in full, involves many more facets than we can discuss in this chapter. Our approach here will be to weave together two key interrelated themes: (1) the quest for development, which for most of the century was equated with industrialization, and (2) the entry of the masses fully into political life, which produced populism and ended tragically in military authoritarianism.
