ABSTRACT

While making a sandwich for a customer, Adam cut his hand with a knife. The cut was not deep, did not bleed much, and did not need sutures. He stood back from the counter, overwhelmed by what had just happened. He felt anxious, and could not catch his breath. The casual conversation of the patient customers standing in front of the long deli case rose in his ears to a frightening pitch, though none of what he heard was in any way critical of him.
