ABSTRACT

This chapter is about role-taking, a concept which has assumed a high profile in developmental psychology in the last ten or fifteen years. I shall review the background of this research ‘boom’ briefly, and then go on to appraise some of the methods which have been used to study role-taking development. In the latter part of the chapter I shall focus on the relationship between role-taking and social behaviour, where an alternative to the currently prevailing ‘cognitive developmental’ viewpoint seems to be emerging.
