On 3 November 1988, Professor Flora Rheta Schreiber, a distinguished pioneer in the ®eld of child abuse studies and psycho-biography, passed away in her hospital bed in New York City. Best known as the author of the landmark book Sybil, ®rst published in 1973, Schreiber made an enormous contribution to the mental health ®eld by calling widespread attention to the existence of dissociative identity disorder, and to its traumatic origins.
