ABSTRACT

Construction sites have the potential for serious accidents as there are many people close together, many activities are unpredictable because of the dynamic nature of project work and the tolerance towards risk is traditionally quite high, making the frequency and impact of accidents very high. Health conditions are less visible, but just as critical to improving conditions and their link with healthy living environments has given this a higher profile for the construction site conditions, but critically for the designer, for the finished building user and the maintenance team. The mass of legislation designed to reduce accidents has not been as effective as could be hoped and attempts to improve are ongoing. Accident prevention, good management of health and safety and the building environment are the key to improving health and safety and reducing accidents that occur.
