ABSTRACT

History graduates inevitably have an interesting relationship with evidence. Over the course of a long historical education, their awareness and understanding of evidence will have developed to relatively sophisticated levels. However, if they were to be asked direct questions about evidence they sometimes find it difficult to provide clear or precise responses. The QAA (Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education) History Benchmark Statements suggest that history graduates should be able to:

• Read and use texts and other source material – critically and empathetically – addressing questions of genre, content, perspective and purpose.
