ABSTRACT

Assessment is a fundamental aspect of history education. It is an opportunity for the teacher to determine and reflect on pupil learning and progress. Assessment allows the teacher and pupil to consider progress to date and the steps a pupil needs to take in order to get better at history. The teacher can make use of this information to inform their planning and personalize the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. Assessment should be regular, encompass a variety of learning styles and provide prompt and accessible feedback for the pupil to make use of. History educators have strived to remain at the forefront of development in assessment, especially in times of curriculum change such as in the 1990s with the publication of the original version of the National Curriculum and more recently in 2008 with the revised National Curriculum.
