ABSTRACT
Almost the entire Islamic world was colonized by the European powers in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Even those Islamic societies that were not colonized were forced to adopt European political, legal, educational, and financial systems and developed a small Westernized elite that in most cases struggled for independence and progressive reform.
