ABSTRACT

This is a book about teaching children to read and write. It contains a collection of chapters by authors, all of whom are experienced classroom practitioners accomplished at literacy teaching and committed to supporting colleagues through the sharing of good practice. The book aims to highlight issues about literacy learning that are currently under debate, and to give practical guidance on teaching. With 16 contributors, it is unsurprising that there are different styles in the presentation of each chapter. Some chapters include descriptions of research projects and the consequent impact on pedagogy, while others express strongly held views about classroom experience or offer suggestions about teaching of immediate practical value. All are deeply concerned with supporting teachers in offering their pupils the most effective literacy learning experiences possible.
