ABSTRACT

Andrews, writing 50 years after the Civil War, accessed a large number of now rare and hard-to-fi nd personal accounts of women’s war experiences. Although his prose and perspective will appear quaint and dated to modern readers, some fi rst-person narratives in his volume appear nowhere else. Andrews focus is on women who supported fathers, husbands and brothers against federal and military authority, even at the cost of imprisonment.
