ABSTRACT
One of the pleasures of a visit to the National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh is to encounter Jan Steen’s painting “A School for Boys and Girls,” of about 1670. The picture crossed the Atlantic in recent years, having been shown as part of the major Steen exhibition in Washington in 1996, where it was enjoyed by new groups of viewers (Chapman 1996).
