ABSTRACT
Each of us has had our “aha” moment when we realized the urgency of the ecological and social crises the planet faces. For Jeff, it was when he realized that our culture was about to burn up in a few hundred years the non-renewable fossil fuels that took millions of years to createyet we were acting like they would never run out. For Rebecca, it was finally stopping her apologies for the enormous pain she experiences in the face of animal suffering as she recognized that our culture relies on that shaming to keep a certain system of thinking in place. For Johnny, it was sitting in class and realizing that difference is at the heart of all life, not just human life; so all kinds of exclusion will be violent. We have to do something about violence, and it can’t be through violence to either humans or to non-humans.
