ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an examination and discussion of the connections that can be made between National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) data and several key findings from the Expert Study. The NAEP reading framework also calls for the assessment of students’ ability to read a variety of text types. The examination of the NAEP reading assessment and findings from the Expert Study suggest several implications for those who seek to increase students’ reading achievement. If literature-based reading instruction involves the use of varied and multiple reading materials, this NAEP finding supports the experts’ agreements in these clusters. In fact, much of what has been reported by NAEP from the reading assessments of the 1990s is consistent with findings from the Expert Study—providing some empirical support for what the experts agree contributes to student achievement in reading.
