ABSTRACT

For nearly three decades in working with stepfamilies, it has become apparent to me that self-management on the part of the therapist is of utmost importance. During this time I have also been involved in my own effort to manage myself as a stepmother and stepdaughter in my nuclear and extended families. The interlocking triangles in the therapist’s family and the clinical family, viewed through a Bowen family systems theory lens, are the focus of this chapter.
