ABSTRACT

The objective of this handout is to provide clinicians with an outline of the elements necessary for a comprehensive professional disclosure statement when practicing ethical group work. Disclosure statements inform clients about the group therapy process, as well as educate them regarding the parameters of their participation in group treatment. Clear communication regarding the benefits and limitations of group therapy can help prevent client distress and address liability concerns, as well as facilitate a positive working relationship between the client and the therapist. In addition, disclosure statements help clients comprehend informed consent so they can discern voluntary participation.
