ABSTRACT

In the Introduction, we discussed the central research question for this volume: not so much whether institutions matter, but how they matter. Using institutional analysis to explain China’s 30-year transformation perhaps makes an answer to this question more complicated. The China puzzle suggested that there is still a question of whether institutions matter. We started with the supported premise that institutions did matter. The question then became how institutions mattered. In this chapter, we shall fi nd out whether the chapters in this volume, each with its different fi ndings and evidence for certain arguments, have provided a collective answer to this question.
